WWII Navy veteran was farmer
Gail E. Ellwood, 81, of Washington, died at 8:20 a.m. Wednesday, August 13, 2003, in his home, following a lengthy illness.
He was born March 7, 1922, in Washington, a son of Thomas "Pop" and Alta McCallister Ellwood.
Mr. Ellwood was a self-employed farmer.
He was a graduate of Trinity High School and a member of Liberty United Methodist Church.
During World War II, Mr. Ellwood served in the U.S. Navy on the NTS Newport, R.I., and USS Alaska. He received the Point System Medal, Victory Medal, American Campaign Asiatic Pacific Medal with two stars and Philippine Liberation Medal.
He was a member of Sunset Lodge 623 F&AM.
On August 24, 1946, he married Thelma Mary Morgan, who died April 21, 1999.
Surviving are a son, Larry M. Ellwood of Washington; three daughters, Janet Caldwell of Greensboro and Joyce Foringer and Linda Kelley, both of Washington; two brothers, Thomas Ellwood of Washington and John Ellwood of Phoenix, Ariz.; two sisters, Aubrey Ord of Warren and Ariel Newell of Seattle, Wash.; eight grandchildren, Brad Foringer and Ashley Foringer Malone, Brittney and Justin Sickles, Matthew Kelley, Travis and Jared Ellwood and Melissa Pearson; and four great-grandchildren.
A brother, William Ellwood, is deceased.
ELLWOOD - Friends of Gail E. Ellwood of Washington, who died Wednesday, August 13, 2003, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 395 East Maiden Street, Washington, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 16, with Pastor Gary Gibson officiating. Interment will follow in Washington Cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Trinity Hospice, 2030 Ardmore Boulevard, Suite 210, Pittsburgh, PA 15221.
