William Marion Bilby

September 26, 1908 — July 9, 2003

William Marion Bilby, 94, of Washington, died Wednesday, July 9, 2003 in the Washington County Health Center following a lengthy illness. He was born in Washington on September 26, 1908, a son of Norman C. and Sarah Elizabeth Smith Bilby. He was retired having worked as a Foreman at Hazel Atlas # 1 and Continental Can Corporation. Mr. Bilby served in the United States Army, Company C, 258th Engineers Combat Battalion in the Rhineland and Central Europe. He received the Good Conduct Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 2 Bronze Stars as well as the World War II Victory Medal. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post # 927, 40 & 8, and Edwin Scott Linton Post # 175 American Legion and had been an active member of it’s Firing Squad for 50 years, until his illness. On March 17, 1928 he married Mary Ellen Pierson who survives. They recently celebrated 75 years of marriage. Also surviving are two sons, Robert and Donald Bilby of Washington; a daughter Hilda Mae Dicks of Ringgold, Georgia; a brother Kenneth Bilby of Tennessee; a sister Ida Beard; 6- grandchildren ,2-step-grandchildren, 16- great-grandchildren, and 1-great-great grandchild. Preceding him in death are a son William Charles Bilby who died in infancy and a brother Raymond Bilby. Friends of William Marion Bilby, who died Wednesday, July 9. 2003 will be received on Saturday from 7 to 9 and Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM in the William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington where funeral services will be held on Monday, July 14, 2003 at 11:00 AM, Pastor Floyd Marasco and Pastor James Ingram co-officiating. Interment will follow in Washington Cemetery. Full Military Honors at graveside by Edwin Scott Linton Post # 175.
