George Sheldon Hensel, 81, of Washington died Tuesday, July 8, 2003 in the Donnell House . He was born in Canonsburg on March 19, 1922 a son of George P. and Bessie Smith Hensel. Mr. Hensel was a graduate of Hickory High School and had attended both, Washington & Jefferson College and Wittenberg University. He had served in the United States Army-Air Force as a Pilot on WW II with the 5th Combat Cargo Squadron in the South Pacific.
Mr. Hensel was a member of the Church of the Covenant. He worked for more than 28 years as a Photographer for School Pictures Inc. He also worked at the Washington Elks as an Assistant Manager and Citizens Library as Custodian Manager.
He was a member of Sunset Lodge # 623 , Claysville American Legion, and Washington Elks Lodge. Mr. Hensel was an active leader in the Boy Scouts of America and Indian Guides.
On March 4, 1944 he married Martha Irvine Wilson, who survives. Also surviving are a son Donald W. Hensel of Atlanta, Georgia; three daughters, Terrie Costello, C. Suzanne Hensel, and Janice H. Murdoch, all of Washington; two brothers, J. Willard Hensel of Claysville and Robert Hensel of Newton, North Carolina; two sisters, Ruth Mumaw of Sugar Creek, Ohio and Mary E. Hensel of Newton, North Carolina; five grandchildren, Christopher Costello, Andrew and Lowrie Murdoch, Martha and Philip Hensel.
Preceding him in death is a brother, W.B. Hensel.
Friends will be recieved on Friday, July 11, 2003 in the Church of The Covenant, 267 East Beau Street, Washington from 2 to 3:00 PM, the time of services, Rev. Thomas Hamilton officiating.
