Alvin Homer Simpson

Alvin Homer Simpson, 90, of Mesa, Arizona, formerly of Hickory, died Saturday, December 18, 2004, at home following a short illness. He was born in Rea, on December 20, 1913, a son of Homer and Velma Roney Simpson. He had attended Hickory Schools. He was a World War II Veteran of the United States Army, having served in Germany where he received the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with three Bronze stars and a Purple Heart after being wounded on March 24, 1945. He is a member of the American Legion in Tempe, Arizona. Mr. Simpson was a truck driver throughout his life and a member of the Teamsters Union. He had driven for Suwak Trucking, Hull Resurfacing in Butler, and Koppers in Wellsburg, West Virginia. After his retirement, he and his wife would spend winters in Mesa, Arizona, and summers in both Ohio and Pennsylvania. They would drive a different route each year when making the trips. Additionally, he drove the Alcan Highway to Alaska on two occasions. He enjoyed gardening and planting fruit trees and working in his yard. On June 15, 1934, he eloped to Wellsville, West Virginia and married Nora Jean Davidson who is deceased. Surviving are three children, a son Richard Simpson and his wife Carolyn of Queen Creek, Arizona, Nancy Willis and her husband Edward of Washington, and Ruth Ann Easton and her husband Harland of Mesa, Arizona; a sister Jean Moore of Hickory who visited him several weeks per year in Arizona; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, who loved him and whom he loved dearly. Preceding him in death are brothers Lyle and Ross; and a sister Dorethea. Friends will be received on Wednesday, December 29, 2004, from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon, the time of services, win the William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 12:00 noon, Rev. Dr. Kenneth N. Schott officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Prospect Cemetery, Hickory. Military honors graveside by Edwin Scott Linton Post # 175, American Legion. The family requests memorial donations be made to a Hospice of your choice.
