WWII vet was member of Claysville Christian Church James Earl Miller Sr., 79, of Independence Township, died Saturday, August 30, 2003, in his home following a brief illness. He was born February 11, 1924, in Donegal Township, a son of Edgar McCreay and Hazel Dean McVay Miller. Mr. Miller attended West Alexander schools and served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II, receiving the American Service Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal. He was a member of Claysville Christian Church. Mr. Miller was a member of James R. Hunt American Legion Post 639. He worked as a heavy-equipment operator for Local 66 for many years. Mr. Miller owned and operated a dairy farm in Independence Township. He retired from Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, having been a Washington County dog law enforcement officer for 20 years. On August 14, 1943, in Anadarko, Okla., he married Dorothy Jean Epton, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, James Earl "Bud" Jr. and Raymond (Jake) Miller, both of Claysville; three daughters, Eva Jean Naylor of Claysville, Judith Kay Ware of Washington and Dorothy Ann Margaria of Avella; a brother, Edgar Miller of Washington; two sisters, Opal Smith of Elm Grove, W.Va., and Hazel Fulks of Ukiah, Calif.; 12 grandchildren, David Ingram, Brenda Murray, Beverly Foringer, James Howard Rawle, Stephen Miller, James Earl Miller III, Megan Miller, Michael and Lori Naylor, Andrew Miller and Jasmine and Marlana Margaria; and three great-grandchildren. Deceased are a brother, Raymond Miller; and two sisters, Thelma Smith and Ruby Pearl Miller. MILLER - Friends of James Earl Miller Sr. of Independence Township, who died Saturday, August 30, 2003, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 2, with the Rev. Dennis Arnold and the Rev. Orien Hunter officiating. Interment will follow in West Alexander Cemetery. Full military honors will be accorded at graveside by Claysville American Legion Post 639. The family requests donations to Albert Gallatin Hospice.
