Stationed on USS New Jersey in WWII
Vincent F. Smodic, 83, of Washington, died Saturday, August 3, 2002, in Washington County Health Center, Washington, following a brief illness.
He was born February 3, 1919, in Wick Haven, a son of Joseph and Mary Mayda Smodic.
Mr. Smodic worked as a coal miner in Mathis Mine for more than 36 years before retirement.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was stationed on USS New Jersey.
Mr. Smodic was a member of American Legion Post 175, SNPJ Lodge 257 and Pulaski Club, all in Washington.
On August 19, 1941, he married Frances L. Flora, who died December 5, 1995.
Surviving are four sons, Leroy Edward Feather, Dennis L. Smodic and Donald E. Smodic, all of Washington, and Vincent F. Smodic Jr. of Greensburg; a daughter, Sheila Dague of Washington; a brother, Walter Smodic of Masontown; eight grandchildren, Jerry Dague Jr., Jennifer Craig, Adam, John and Gretchen Smodic, Lawrence and Michael Feather and Tracy Till; nine great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
Deceased are three brothers, Joseph, Paul and Frank Smodic.
At the request of the deceased, private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in Washington Cemetery.
