E. Evelyn Comstock Wright, 83, of Washington, died at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, March 29, 2003, in Washington Hospital.
She was born August 24, 1919, in Centerville, a daughter of George E. and S. Virginia Piper Wright.
Mrs. Wright was a member of Lone Pine Christian Church, where she taught Sunday school classes for all ages, served as deaconess and was an elder emeritus and chairperson. She also was a member and held various offices of its Christian Womens' Fellowship.
She was a 1937 graduate of Masontown High School and graduated from Shippensburg College of District Justice.
For five years, she was assistant chief adult probation and parole officer of Washington County.
Mrs. Wright retired in 1981 from the Washington County Court system at the domestic relations office, where she was a case management and hearing officer for five years.
She was a member and served as secretary of Southwest Area Council of the state Association of Probation.
As a teenager, she did housework and nursing for mothers having babies at home.
Mrs. Wright had been a salesperson at G.C. Murphy Co. and for Swift Homes. She managed and co-owned Lone Pine Clover Farm Store and Motel and Tourist Home on East Maiden Street in Washington. She demonstrated and sold Stanley products and Emmons Jewelry.
Mrs. Wright volunteered with Family Services of Washington, Washington Hospital and Health and Welfare Council. She helped conduct and coordinate senior citizens' first recreational and learning meetings. She was instrumental in conducting the first mental health seminars and programs in Washington County.
Mrs. Wright served as president of the parent-teacher associations at Lone Pine and Laboratory elementary schools.
She was a charter member of Lone Pine and South Strabane No. 1 Fireman's Auxiliary.
Mrs. Wright served as secretary and was a member of Washington County Democrat Women and helped organize Amwell Township Democrat Women.
On January 7, 1939, she married Marland "Bud" Comstock, who died February 23, 1989.
On March 3, 1990, she married William Wright, who died March 10, 1995.
She was the companion of Homer Ford.
Surviving are three sons, Richard and Daniel Comstock, both of Washington, and George Comstock of Butler; two daughters, Shirley Desmond of Washington and Betty Crompton of Washington; nine grandchildren, Karen, Joel, Stacey, Mark and Michelle Comstock, Melissa Holik, Jonathan Crompton, Jimmy Desmond and Diane Cramer; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased are two brothers, George and James R. Wright; and three sisters, Mary Rasel, Grace Scott and Martha Verner.
WRIGHT - Friends of E. Evelyn Comstock Wright, who died Saturday, March 29, 2003, will be received from 2 to 9 p.m. Monday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. Additional visitation will be held from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., the time of services, Tuesday, April 1, in Lone Pine Christian Church, with the Rev. James Kent officiating. Interment will be in Washington Cemetery.
