Edwin Burns Swartz, Jr.

Edwin Burns Swartz, Jr., 96, of Hickory, died Monday, December 17, 2007, in Southmont of Presbyterian Senior Care, following a brief illness. He was born May 31, 1911, in Hickory, a son of Dr. Edwin Burns Swartz, Sr. and Mabel Irene Kille Swartz. Mr. Swartz was a graduate of Hickory High School and Westminster College. He also attended Carnegie Mellon for social work. During World War II, he was a field director with the American Red Cross. For 35 years, Mr. Swartz worked for Columbia Gas as the manager of its credit union. He was a member of Hickory United Presbyterian Church, where he was a past elder, choir member and Sunday School teacher, and served on various committees in the Washington Presbytery. Mr. Swartz was a member and past president of the Hickory Lions Club and served on the Fort Cherry School Board for 20 years, including time as chairman of the board. He enjoyed cooking, traveling, gardening and yard work. On December 2, 1940, he married Libera Ferrari, who died April 22, 2003. Surviving are two daughters, Dr. Anne Swartz of New York City and Carol Baxter of Charlotte, North Carolina; and two grandchildren, Mark Baxter of Austin, Texas, and Jeffrey Baxter of Charleston, South Carolina; several nieces and nephews; and his special care-giver, Colleen Pascuzzi. Deceased are two brothers, Samuel Swartz and Rev. Louis Swartz; and a sister, Dorothy Weiss, who also died December 17, 2007. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 21, 2007, in Hickory United Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Douglas Reinard officiating.
