Kenneth D. Varner

Former Washington Steel maintenance foreman Kenneth D. Varner Sr., 74, of Washington, died at 8:30 p.m. Friday, May 17, 2002, in Washington Hospital. He was born December 5, 1927, in Preston County, W.Va., a son of Everett B. (Jack) and Pearl Lytton Varner. Mr. Varner was employed as a maintenance foreman for Washington Steel. He was a member of Washington Lodge 164 F&AM. Mr. Varner enjoyed auctions, collecting and family gatherings. He previously was employed as a service manager for Cummins Motors of Canonsburg. At the close of World War II, he was a staff sergeant with the U.S. Army in Germany, serving with Troop B of the 81st Constabulary Squadron. He received the Army of Occupation Medal and World War II Victory Medal, and was discharged from the service in 1947. On April 23, 1947, he married Laura Adams, who survives. Also surviving are four sons, Kenneth D. Varner Jr. of Washington, Bruce Varner of Claysville, Tom Varner of Claysville and David Varner of Avella; two daughters, Ellen Wallace and Diane Bova, both of Washington; five brothers, Fred Varner of Kingwood, W.Va., William E. Varner of Claysville, the Rev. John Varner of Washington, James Varner of Washington and Glenn Varner of Kingsport, Tenn.; two sisters, Kathy Kelley of Washington and Mildred Keller of Kansas; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are four brothers, Charles "Sonny", Patrick and Michael Varner, and Bobby Jo Varner, who died in infancy; and three sisters, Lula "Sis" Varner and twin sisters, Ethel and Ellen Varner, who died in infancy. VARNER - Friends of Kenneth D. Varner Sr. of Washington, who died Friday, May 17, 2002, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 21, with Pastor Gary Gibson officiating.
