Elder in Jehovah's Witnesses
John P. Harvey, 85, of Washington, died at 10:15 p.m. Friday, April 30, 2004, in Donnell House, Washington, following a lingering illness.
He was born September 24, 1918, in Midlothian, Md., a son of Anthony and Helen Conrad Harvey.
Mr. Harvey was employed at Findlay Refractories for 20 years prior to retirement.
He was a member and an elder in the Washington congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Coast Guard as chief petty officer, receiving the World War II Victory Medal, American Defense Medal, Coast Guard Good Conduct Medal, Bronze Star and Rescue Flotilla. He participated in D-Day in Normandy and received the European-African-Middle East Campaign ribbon.
Mr. Harvey was an avid reader and was well-versed on the Bible.
On June 24, 1942, he married Ruth Panagot, who survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Joanna Ruth Pagliarulo, at home, and Beverly Jean Berkhofer of Saddle Brook, N.J.; four grandchildren, Kimberly Lender, Steven Pagliarulo and Barbara and Bridget Berkhofer; and four great-grandchildren.
Deceased are a brother, Leroy Harvey; and five sisters, Margaret Jones, Helen Whetstone, Alva Hamilton, Eloise and Gertrude.
