James Allen Wherry Sr., 82, of Washington, died at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 4, 2002, in Humbert Lane Health Care Center, Washington, following a two-year illness.
He was born May 18, 1919, in Tarentum, a son of James Jay and Blanche Anderson Wherry.
Mr. Wherry was a member of Jefferson Avenue United Methodist Church for more than 50 years.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Union Camp for 40 years.
During World War II, Mr. Wherry served in the U.S. Fifth Army, under Gen. Mark Clark, in northern France, Apennines and Po Valley. He received the Good Conduct Medal, European Theater Service Medal, with two bronze stars, and the Victory Medal.
On December 28, 1943, he married Virginia Mae Morrison, who survives.
Also surviving are three sons, James A. Wherry Jr. of Washington, Robert Lee Wherry of McMurray and Paul Reed Wherry of Canonsburg; two daughters, Linda Ann Wherry of Washington and Gloria Penderville of Houston; and five grandchildren, Brenda Ann Penderville, John Brian Penderville, Pamela Joyce Wherry, Jennifer Nicole Wherry and Paul Reed Wherry Jr.
WHERRY - Friends of James Allen Wherry Sr. of Washington, who died Saturday, May 4, 2002, will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, with the Rev. John Hoffman officiating. Interment will be in Washington Cemetery.
