Charles L. " Bud " Bard

NASA space engineer retired from ARMCO Charles L. "Bud" Bard, 82, of Washington, died Sunday, June 9, 2002, in Donnell House, Washington. He was born February 19, 1920, in Portersville, a son of John Samuel and Della Seybert Bard. Mr. Bard was a graduate of Washington High School and West Penn Technical School in Pittsburgh. During World War II, he honorably served his country as a member of the Office of Strategic Service, working out of Egypt, Turkey and Greece. Mr. Bard worked as a draftsman at Pennsylvania Transformer until 1958. He then worked for Chrysler Space Division and NASA as a space engineer. He worked on the Saturn 1B missile from the first to final stage that made the moon landing. He worked in Huntsville and Redstone, Ala., Michoud, La., and Cape Kennedy, Fla. In 1970, he worked as an engineer at Rodman Laboratory at ARMCO on Rock Island, Ill., where he retired in 1983. He was Methodist and a 50-year member of Chartiers Lodge 297 F&AM. On September 14, 1948, in West Washington Methodist Church, he married Lois Crichley, who survives. Also surviving are three brothers, Sam Bard of Mooringsport, La., John H. (Jack) Bard of Waldron, Ark., and Guy Bard Sr. of Houston; a sister, Doris (Debbie) Knestrick of Amity; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Deceased are two brothers, Albert Glen and William James Bard; and a sister, Lois Bard Orbin. BARD - Friends of Charles L. "Bud" Bard of Washington, who died Sunday, June 9, 2002, will be received from 1 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 395 East Maiden Street, Washington, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 13, with Pastor Gary Gibson officiating. Entombment will follow in Washington Cemetery Mausoleum.
