Shirley Louise Monk

Shirley Louise Monk, 89, of Washington, died Sunday, December 23, 2007, in her residence at Strabane Woods, where she had lived for the past five and a half years. She was born January 16, 1918, in Luzerne, a daughter of William and Bertha Austin Hawke. Mrs. Monk graduated from Luzerne High School and Wilkes Barre Business College. She was a homemaker and had once worked as a bookkeeper at Okonite Company. Mrs. Monk enjoyed crocheting, reading, playing cards, gardening, cooking, playing bingo at Strabane Woods, and spending time with her daughter, grandchildren and great-grandchild. On March 25, 1948, she married Clifford L. Monk, who died in March 2002. They were united in marriage by her brother, Rev. Russell Hawke. Surviving are a daughter, Sherrill (John) Ripley of Avella; three grandchildren, Bart (Bekah) Ripley, Amber Ripley and Nick Ripley; a great-grandchild, Alexandra Ripley; and a nephew, Earl “Bob” Monk. Deceased are brothers, Herbert, Willard, and Rev. Russell Hawke; and a sister, Audrey Mason. Friends will be received 5 to 7 p.m., the hour of service, Thursday, December 27th, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Shavertown, at 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 28, 2007.
