Melvin Leroy White

Melvin Leroy “ Whitey “ White, 67, of Washington, died Monday, August 2, 2004, in the Washington Hospital following a two year illness. He was born in Claysville on December 5, 1936, a son of Charles Robert and Ellen Gertrude Longstreath White. Mr. White was an avid Deer Hunter and member of the Canonsburg Sportsman’s Association. He was a retired Truck Driver and member of the Teamsters # 585. Prior to retirement, he worked for Judson Wiley & Sons for thirteen years and had served as Shop Steward. He previously had worked at McLean Trucking for six years and Lightning Express for eleven years. Mr. White was a thirty year member of American Legion Post # 175. On June 15, 1973, he married Julie May Headley who survives. Also surviving are; a son David Leroy White, husband of Margaret , of Washington; two daughters, Tami Jo Rogers, wife of Charles Rogers, Sr., of Washington, and Tena Rae Harding, wife of Jim Harding of Bentleyville; four brothers, John William, Donald Wayne, and Delbert Dean White, all of Claysville, Paul James White of Taylorstown; a step-brother Robert White of Elyria, Ohio; two sisters, Carol Camp of Claysville and Mary Jane Martin of Washington; five grandchildren, Charles Roy Rogers, Jr., Jamie and Jason Harding, Heather and Rachel White. Also surviving is his life-long friend, Johnny Jones who he met daily for breakfast. Preceding him in death area grandson, Justin Daniel Rogers; a brother, Wray White; a sister, Jean Sprowls; and a step-brother, Bill White who also died on Monday, August 2, 2004. Friends of Melvin Leroy “ Whitey “ White, of Washington, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm Tuesday in the William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held on Wednesday, August 4, 2004, at 11:00 am with Pastor Gary Gibson officiating. Burial will follow in Claysville Cemetery. Military honors graveside by Edwin Scot Linton Post # 175 of the American Legion. The family requests memorial donations be made to support United States Troops Overseas in care of American Legion Post # 175, Park Avenue, Washington, PA, 15301.
