Donald L. Nelson

Retired ironworker from Avella Donald L. Nelson, 65, of Avella, died at 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 12, 2002, in the Washington Hospital emergency room. He was born June 29, 1936, in Bristoria (Greene County), a son of James L. and Dora M. Hughes Nelson. Mr. Nelson was an ironworker for 35 years before retiring in 1993, having last worked for I.C.I. He was a member of American Legion Post 643 in Avella. Mr. Nelson enjoyed country music and high school football. On January 16, 1955, he married Rita B. Roberts, who died November 3, 1986. Surviving are two sons, Richard L. and Donald A. Nelson, both of Avella; two daughters, Christina Raineri of Avella and Brenda Long of Wellsburg, W.Va.; a brother, Joe Nelson of Waynesburg; five sisters, Ilene Wood, Clara Lou Zollars and Judy Hoge, all of Waynesburg, Jackie Wood of Monaca and Marjorie Wise of South Carolina; and six grandchildren, David and Austin Raineri, Hunter Long and D.J., Dalton and Dylon Nelson. Deceased are a sister, Lucy Wilkerson; and two brothers, Jim and Jerry Nelson. NELSON - Friends of Donald L. Nelson, 65, of Avella, who died Wednesday, June 12, 2002, will be received from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. Services will be private and held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to American Legion Post 643, Avella, PA 15312.
