Raymond Lee Burke, 78, of Washington, died Friday, July 30, 2004 in the Canonsburg Hospital following a lengthy illness. Mr. Burke was born in Washington on September 18, 1925, a son of Grover C. and Mae Newman Burke. He was a World War II Army Veteran having served as a Paratrooper in the Central European Campaign. He was captured in October 1944 in Holland and held for 18 months in Germany as a Prisoner of War. He received the Distinguished Unit Badge, Good Conduct Medal, EAMET Service Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal.
Mr. Burke was a member of the Church of Christ, Washington.
He had once worked in shipping at Hazel Atlas # 2 and later at J & L Steel prior to retirement.
His wife, Betty Mowl is deceased.
He is survived by two step-sons and a sister Virginia Grimm of Washington.
Preceding Mr. Burke in death are four brothers, Walter, Ernest, James A., and David Burke.
Friends of Raymond L. Burke, of Washington, will be received from 7 to 9 pm Saturday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm Sunday in the William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held on Monday, August 2, 2004 at 11:00 am, Bob Davison officiating. Interment will follow in Washington Cemetery.
