John Hanlin Hunter

April 18, 1908 — October 3, 2002

Hopewell Township farmer John Hanlin Hunter, 94, of Washington, formerly of Avella R.D.2, died at 6:30 a.m. Thursday, October 3, 2002, in the Washington Hospital emergency room. He was born April 18, 1908, in Hopewell Township, a son of John Smiley and Lillian Hanlin Hunter. Mr. Hunter was a self-employed farmer for 80 years. He was a member of First United Presbyterian Church of Washington and former member of Cross Creek Grange. Mr. Hunter served for 36 years on Avella School Board, 12 years as president, was a member of Upper Buffalo Cemetery Board and past master of Washington County Pomona Grange. He was a graduate from Hopewell High School at age 16 and attended Washington & Jefferson College. Mr. Hunter was an avid roller skater and ice skater. On April 18, 1945, he married Mary Louise Taggart, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Lee and Kenneth Hunter, both of Washington; four daughters, Joyce Anderson of Washington, Donna Hunter of Boston, Mass., Carolyn Molnar of Avella and Arlene McNeel of Windber; and 12 grandchildren, Ronald, Mark, James, John, Jamie and Kimberly Hunter, Kelly Anderson, Josh and Matt Molnar, Stephanie Molnar and Ryan and Brandon McNeel. HUNTER - Friends of John Hanlin Hunter of Washington, formerly of Avella R.D.2, who died Thursday, October 3, 2002, will be received from 2 to 9 p.m. Friday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, October 5, with the Rev. Robert A. Hedges officiating. Interment will follow in Upper Buffalo Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to First United Presbyterian Church, 34 West Wheeling Street, Washington, PA 15301.
