Former YMCA youth director
Donald Wayne Smith, 74, of Janesville, Wis., died Sunday morning, November 10, 2002, at his home, following a two-year battle with malignant melanoma.
He was born February 22, 1928, in Johnstown, a son of C. Arnold and Helen Wallace Smith.
Mr. Smith graduated from Washington High School in 1947, attended the School of Designing Arts in Pittsburgh, Penn State University, California University of Pennsylvania and University of Wisconsin-Rock County in Janesville.
He served in the U.S. Navy for four years.
Mr. Smith was former youth director of Washington YMCA and Camp Buffalo. After moving to Janesville, he was director of Tri-County YMCA and Camp Rotamer. At the time of his death, he operated Heritage Restorations Furniture Refinishing.
He was a member and elder of Rock Prairie United Presbyterian Church, a member of Rock County Historical Society, Rock County AARP, National Audubon Society, Rotary Gardens Volunteers and "Grumpies", a docent at Lincoln-Tallman Restorations. He was a former leader with Boy Scouts, 4-H, Sea Scouts and YMCA.
Mr. Smith loved children, animals and the outdoors.
On December 10, 1953, in Hickory, he married Marjorie White, who survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Barbara Morris of Palmdale, Calif., and Beckie Endrizzi of Janesville; a son, Jay Smith of Springfield, Va.; nine grandchildren, Rachel, Nathaniel and Benjamin Morris, Maggie, Sarah and John Smith, Nicolas and Brandon Krause and Jake Endrizzi; two brothers, Wallace A. Smith of New York and Roy D. Smith of Ohio; and many nieces and nephews.
SMITH - Friends of Donald Wayne Smith of Janesville, Wis., who died Sunday, November 10, 2002, will be received from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., the hour of services, Saturday, November 16, at William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, with the Rev. Douglas R. Reinard and the Rev. Gary S. Shields Sr. officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Prospect Cemetery, Hickory. Military rites will be accorded by Edwin Scott Linton American Legion Post 175. Memorials may be made to Rock Prairie Church Memorial Garden, or Rotary Gardens in Janesville, or A.D. White Research Society, Avella.
