Curtis W. McGaughey, 101, of Avella, died Monday, November 1, 2004, in the Canonsburg Hospital following a brief illness. He was born on October 2, 1903, a son of Edgar R. and Elizabeth Montgomery McGaughey. Mr. McGaughey was a member of the Grove United Presbyterian Church and had served as an Elder and Trustee in the church. He was a retired Mailman and had delivered mail in Avella for more than 37 years, part of which on horseback. Additionally, he was a dairy farmer and had worked as such until the age of 84. The farm was originally in his wife’s family and is now known as the Hamilton Brother’s Farm and is owned by his twin grandsons Curt and Chris Hamilton.
Mr. McGaughey enjoyed guns, hunting, fishing, and sharing humorous stories with friends and family.
On June 1, 1935, he married Mary Scott who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Martha ( Marcy ) Hamilton Helsel of Avella; a brother Joe McGaughey of Charleroi; two grandsons, Curt and Chris Hamilton of Avella; and eight great-grand daughters.
Preceding him in death are two sisters, Eva Starbuck and Wilnetta Maloy; three brothers, John, LeRoy, and Merle McGaughey.
Friends of Curtis W. McGaughey, 101, of Avella, will be received on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm in the William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Ave., where services will be held on Thursday, November 4, 2004 with Michael Krajacic officiating. Burial will follow in West Middletown Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to; Grove United Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 88, West Middletown, PA, 15379.
