John David Ostovic

John David Ostovic, 55, of Washington, died at 4:39 p.m. on Tuesday, October 26, 2004, at UPMC-Presbyterian in Pittsburgh, PA, as the result of a traumatic brain injury. He was surrounded by his family. He was born October 26, 1949, in Fredericktown, a son of the late Francis B. "Bronko" and Marie Yurechka Ostovic. Mr. Ostovic was a graduate of Bethlehem-Center High School, attended the University of Pittsburgh, and graduated from California State College (now California University). While at Pitt, he was in the Air Force R.O.T.C. program. He held numerous certifications in electrical engineering. He enjoyed music and played bass in a local rock band during the early 70s. He taught Chemistry at Beth-Center High School, and on October 24, 1974, he was hired as an electrician at the Washington County Courthouse. He was promoted to maintenance supervisor and remained in that capacity until October 22 when he was injured while at work. Throughout his 30 years with the County, Mr. Ostovic received many awards and citations from the Commissioners for his dedication to his job and for perfect work attendance. He was admired by his friends, family and colleagues for having a deep sense of compassion, an affective sense of humor, and was known for his vast wealth of knowledge. He was a trivia enthusiast and enjoyed reading science fiction and westerns. An avid fisherman and hunter, Mr. Ostovic often traveled to Colorado to hunt and was a gun enthusiast. He specifically enjoyed sharing his love of fishing with his late father-in-law, Raymond "Bob" Thomas. He worked part-time at Ace Sporting Goods for several years and enjoyed sharing his knowledge of guns with others. He and his daughter, Sarah Jane, were once active as Civil War re-enactors with the 9th Pennsylvania. Additionally, He had taken part in a Battle of Gettysburg Reenactment. Mr. Ostovic was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Washington, and was a member of the United Lutheran Society. On June 30, 1979, he married Mary Ann Thomas, his best friend, who survives. Also surviving are; his daughter, Sarah Jane McCoid of Washington; a granddaughter, Molly Ann McCoid of Washington, two brothers, Francis B. and his wife, Darla, of Laurel, MD, and Michael and his wife, Nancy, of Chardon, OH; his mother-in-law, Mary E. Thomas of Washington; 11 nieces and nephews. Several great nieces and great nephews, and cousins. Friends of John David Ostovic, 55, of Washington, who died on Tuesday, October 26, 2004, will be recieved on Monday, November 1, 2004, at the First Lutheran Church, N. Franklin & W. Walnut Streets, from 10 to 11 am, the time of services, Rev. Dr. Kenneth Schott officiating. Internment immediately following at Mt. Prospect Cemetery in Hickory, PA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the John D. Ostovic Memorial Fund at the Donora Public Library, 510 Meldon Avenue, Donora, PA 15033. Mr. Ostovic's father, Bronco, was a native of Donora. Arrangements are under the direction of William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue.
