22-year Jessop steel employee, WWII vet.
William George "Bud" Heatley Sr., 90, of Washington, died at 6:10 p.m. Friday, May 25, 2007, in The Washington Hospital, following a brief illness.
He was born December 5, 1916, in Washington, a son of Trevolia C. Heatley Sr. and Margaret A. Amos Heatley.
Mr. Heatley graduated from Trinity High School in 1936 and worked as a sales correspondent in the specialty steel department of Jessop Steel for 22 years.
He served on Trinity School Board for 12 years and on the North Franklin Sanitary Authority for three years. Mr. Heatley was a member of Broad Street Baptist Church, BPOE 776 and Boy's Baseball Council and was past president and a manager for local Pony League Baseball.
He was an avid golfer and dart ball player, BPOE Team, and enjoyed bowling. He formerly played basketball for S.A. Myers' Washington Pro's All American League and was manager and player for Scott Motors baseball team.
During World War II, Mr. Heatley served in the U.S. Navy as an Electrician's Mate, second class, in the Pacific Theater. He joined the U.S. Navy December 7, 1943, and was honorably discharged February 2, 1946. His awards include the World War II Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal and Asiatic-Pacific Theater Medal.
On October 15, 1938, he married Fern E. Devore, who survives.
Also surviving are a son, William George (Dale) Heatley Jr. of Chantilly, Va.; a daughter, Karen Sue (James) Palfreyman of Washington; a sister, Patricia (Paul) Barnes of Beallsville; nine grandchildren, Scott Palfreyman, Michael Palfreyman, Brian Palfreyman, Khristin Heatley, Jeff Heatley, Terri Foley, Debbie Brock, Douglas Heatley and Mark Heatley; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Deceased are two brothers, Trevolia C. Heatley Jr. and James E. Heatley; and two sisters, Peggy Ann Heatley and Louise Clapp.
Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, with the Rev. Steven Brotzman and the Rev. James Inghram officiating. Burial will follow in Washington Cemetery.
