James Walter Carlisle, Sr.

Received Outstanding Postal Retiree Award James W. Carlisle Sr., 69, of Houston, formerly of Hickory, died Monday, April 28, 2003, in Donnell House, Washington, following a lengthy illness. He was born November 10, 1933, in Hickory, a son of Clifford C. and Wilhelmina Stewart Carlisle. Mr. Carlisle was a graduate of Hickory High School and a member of its Alumni Association. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and received the National Defense Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Korean Service Medal. For more than 31 years, Mr. Carlisle worked as a rural mail carrier in the Hickory area, retiring in 1994. Upon retirement, he received the Outstanding Postal Retiree Award for working 31 continuous years without a sick day. For this, he was featured on Channel 4 News. He was a member of Hickory United Presbyterian Church, Richard Vaux Lodge 454 of Burgettstown, Valley of Pittsburgh, National Rural Letter Carriers Association and National Association of Retired Federal Employees. Mr. Carlisle was a former officer and member of Mt. Pleasant Volunteer Fire Department, was active in youth baseball and football, and was an original board member of Tri-State Youth Football. On June 28, 1958, he married Linda Braden, who survives. Also surviving are three sons, James W. Carlisle Jr. of Newark, Ohio, Matthew C. Carlisle of Charlotte, N.C., and Steven E. Carlisle of San Antonio, Texas; a daughter, Lisa L. Duhig of Bethel Park; two sisters, Alene McBride of Cambridge, Ohio, and Dolores Loughry of Hickory; and 12 grandchildren, Andrew, Katie, Abby, Rhianna, Liam, Ronin, Colin, Christopher and Caroline Carlisle and Jordan, Austin and Alex Duhig. CARLISLE - Friends of James W. Carlisle Sr. of Houston, formerly of Hickory, who died Monday, April 28, 2003, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, May 1, with Pastors Jeffrey Marquis and Gary Gibson officiating. Interment in Mt. Prospect Cemetery, Hickory. Family requests donations to Make-a-Wish Foundation or charity of one's choice. Richard Vaux Lodge 454 F&AM will hold Masonic services at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.
