Delia Sweeny

Delia "Dee" Sweeny, 78, of Washington, died at 7:40 p.m. Thursday, June 16, 2005, in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh. She was born August 20, 1926, in Vandergrift, a daughter of John and Jesorina Santy. Mrs. Sweeny was a graduate of Vandergrift High School and Mercy Hospital School of Nursing. She was employed as a registered nurse at Washington Hospital for 40 years. Mrs. Sweeny was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, a 50-year member of a bridge club and a member of Washington Hospital Retirees group. She enjoyed gardening, Bible study, rug-hooking, knitting and crossword puzzles. She was an avid reader and loved to travel. She also loved being a nanny to her seven grandchildren. Mrs. Sweeny was a loving mother and grandmother, who influenced many lives. On September 18, 1948, she married Robert W. Sweeny, who survives. Also surviving are three sons, John Robert and Michael James Sweeny, both of Washington, and Matthew Wallace Sweeny of Minneapolis, Minn.; a daughter, Tamara Jean Roelandts of Jupiter, Fla.; three brothers, Frank Sandy of Harwick, Roemo Santy of Boynton Beach, Fla., and John Santy of Apollo; two sisters, Lida Capretta of Vandergrift and Ivana Zokaites of Wexford; and seven grandchildren, Nicole and Meghan Sweeny, Victoria Roelandts, Patrick McKenzie Sweeny, Robert Roelandts and Sydney and Michael Dale Sweeny. A sister, Grace Fryer, is deceased. Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 395 East Maiden Street, Washington. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, June 20, in Immaculate Conception Church, Washington, with the Rev. John Bauer as celebrant. Burial will follow in Immaculate Conception Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to John F. Kennedy Catholic Scholarship Fund, 111 West Spruce Street, Washington, PA 15301.
