Mary Joann "Sunshine" Hayden, 69, of Washington, died at 1:14 a.m. Monday, November 8, 2004, in Washington Hospital. She had been in ailing health the past year. She was born January 11, 1935, in Washington, a daughter of Harold B. (Jack) and Ruth Ann Fender Hayden. Miss Hayden was a member of Church of the Covenant in Washington. She was a secretary in the payroll department of Jessop Steel for 38 years, owned and operated Family Diner in Wolfdale for 10 years and was formerly employed at Lightning Express and both the Upper and Lower Herd drugstores. Miss Hayden was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and had been sweetheart of the year for two years. She was a graduate of Trinity High School in 1954 and Penn Commercial College. In high school she was a cheerleader and maypole dancer. She enjoyed polka dances and was affiliated with the Polka Mike radio show for a number of years with Mike Panjuscsek. She enjoyed cooking for people and was an animal lover who enjoyed her cats and dogs. Surviving are a brother, Samuel Harold Hayden of Tigard, Ore.; and five sisters, Edna Louise Main, Betty Yeager and Nancy Kisner, all of Washington, and Evelyn Marie Panjuscsek and Phyllis J. Hayden, both of Avella.
Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 395 East Maiden Street, Washington, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, November 12, with the Rev. Kenneth N. Schott officiating. Interment will follow in Prosperity Cemetery.
