WWII and Korean War vet owned Andersons Floral Shop. Alfred A. Anderson, 80, of Washington, died at 6:55 p.m. Friday, November 5, 2004, in Washington Hospital, following a two-month illness. He was born September 2, 1924, in Washington, a son of Earl Eugene and Evelyn Hopkins Anderson. Mr. Anderson was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, where he served as church treasurer. He formerly owned and operated Andersons Floral Shop in Washington. Prior to World War II, he had been employed by Jessop Steel. He was last employed by Precision Industries, from where he retired. Mr. Anderson was a former Washington city councilman. He was a member of Knights of Pythias and Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 776. He was a 60-year member of Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 of American Legion, where he was a past commander, adjutant and chaplain. Mr. Anderson had been active in boys baseball and Little League and helped organize Pony Baseball. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific Theater as a light weapons infantry leader. He also served in Korea during the Korean War. He was wounded twice and received two Purple Hearts, an Asiatic Pacific Theater ribbon, Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, World War II Medal and Korean Service Medal. On June 24, 1967, he married Betty Bernice Smith, who survives with a son, Larry (Sue) Lenhart of Washington; a daughter, Connie (Mike) Cain of Washington; a brother, Charles E. (Evelyn) Anderson of Washington; a sister, Martha C. Beatty of Wildwood, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Stacey, Sherri, Joseph, Michelle, Steve, Chris and Matt; 21 great-grandchildren; a nephew, Charles E. (Jackie) Anderson Jr. of Syracuse, N.Y.; a niece, Deborah (Russ) Knight of Uniontown; a great-nephew; two great-nieces; and a great-great- nephew. Deceased is a grandson, Jeffrey Lynn Cain. Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, November 9, with the Rev. Fred McCloskey officiating. Interment will be held in Washington Cemetery. Full military rites will be accorded graveside by Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 of the American Legion. A memorial service will be held at 8 p.m. Monday by Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 of the American Legion in the funeral home.
