William H. Burke, 68, of Washington, formerly of Westerville, Ohio, died Thursday, June 23, 2005, in his residence. He had been ill since 2000. He was born December 23, 1936, in Washington, a son of Lucille Hampe Ackley of Washington and the late William Franklin Burke. Mr. Burke was a graduate of Hickory High School. He worked as a janitor at Big Walnut High School for 20 years. Mr. Burke collected Indian artifacts. He once coached midget football at Brownson House and had also played adult football. In 1979, he married Josie Kershinsky, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Rebecca Griffith and Michele DeGrave, both of Washington; a stepdaughter, Janette Barni of Washington; a stepson, Joe Barni of Washington; two brothers, David Alrutz of Claysville and Donald Burke of Pittsburgh; a sister, Judith Bradshaw of Washington; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Deceased is a brother, Robert Marshman.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 395 East Maiden Street, Washington, where services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 25, with the Rev. David Stammerjohn officiating. Entombement will follow in Washington Cemetery.
