William H. Garber Jr., 79, of Washington, died at 7:20 a.m. Thursday, October 28, 2004, in Strabane Woods, following a lengthy illness. He was born November 4, 1924, in Washington, a son of William Hobert Sr. and Mary Essie Shoup Garber. Mr. Garber was a mould maker, having been employed at Hazel Atlas Glass, Brockway Glass and Penn Mould. He also operated a service station, the Amoco Station at Exit 3, for 10 years. He attended Washington High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II with Company A, 1265 Engineer Combat Battalion in the European/Middle Eastern area and received European/Middle East Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Victory Medal. He married Mary Mae Grosley, who died October 24, 1992. Surviving are three sons, Ronald William Garber of Bellflower, Calif., Richard Wayne Garber of Washington and David Lee Garber of Ellsworth; a daughter, Katherine Joan Smiley of Sycamore; a brother, Ralph Garber of Jane Lew, W.Va.; two sisters, Katherine Chadwick and Margaret Poland, both of Washington; 10 grandchildren, Christopher, Jeremy, Erica Lynn, Devin, Michelle, Warren Walter and Rachel Sue Garber, Terri Lynn Comer, Heather Dawn Smiley and Melissa Margaret Ealy; and three great-grandchildren. Deceased are two brothers, Robert and Harry Garber; and a great-grandson, Jacob Lee Garber.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, October 30, with Pastor Gary Gibson officiating. Interment in Washington Cemetery.
