Metty (Matt) Onopiuk

Metty “Matt” Onopiuk, 82, of Washington, died January 1, 2008, in the Washington Hospital, following a one-year illness. He was born July 28, 1925, in Washington, a son of Louis and Agnes Kanish Onopiuk. Mr. Onopiuk was a bricklayer and member of the local Bricklayer and Allied Craftworkers. He also was CEO of Interstate Buildings and Construction, Inc., for 30 years and owner of Four Seasons Resort for almost 40 years. Mr. Onopiuk enjoyed fishing, helping young kids, and, most of all, being with his family. He was a member of the Croatian Club of Cokeburg and the Elks. During World War II, Mr. Onopiuk served in the Army in the European Theater. He was awarded the Army of Occupation Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal. He was discharged November 1, 1946, with a rank of Technician, 5th grade. On March 26, 1955, he married Philomena Scandale, who died July 19, 2007. Surviving are a son, Steven (Linda) Presto, Sr.; two daughters, Joy (Randy) Bail and Lynn Brogley; two brothers, Paul Onopiuk of Port Angeles, Washington, and Thomas Onopiuk; one sister, Mary Roach; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Deceased, in addition to his parents, is a brother, Joseph Onopiuk. Friends will be received 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 5, 2008, with Pastor Rick Bruckner officiating. Burial will follow in Washington Cemetery.
