William John Thompson
William John Thompson, 78, of Eighty-Four, died at 6:03 a.m. on Saturday, March 17, 2007, at the Greenery Nursing Home, after a five-month illness. He was born on July 28, 1928, in Fitchburg, MA, a son of William Henry and Sirri Esther Thompson.
Mr. Thompson was President and Owner of the Penn Commercial Beauty Academy and was also an instructor there. He was the North Strabane Township Manager. He was the Director of the Salvation Army for 8 years. He was owner of 84 Video, Thompson & Thompson Real Estate Company and B&T Investigations. He was a registered representative for Hefren-Tillotson, and was the Emergency Management Coordinator for Somerset Township and 84.
Mr. Thompson attended Northwood University in Midland, MI; the University of Hawaii for 3 years, the Oceanside-Carlsbad College for 2 years, and spent 2 years at the Marine Corps Institute.
He was a member of Fourth United Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Thompson served in the United States Navy from July, 1945 to February, 1949.; then in the United States Marine Cops Reserves from April, 1951 to July, 1952; and finally in the United States Marine Corps from August, 1958 to April, 1961, at which time he retired from the Marine Corps. For his service during the Korean War, he was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and he also received 3 Medals of Good Conduct.
Mr. Thompson was a member of the Pitman Lodge No. 197, F&AM in Pitman, New Jersey; the American Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post 175, the Syria Shrine and the VFW Hawkins Post Home 927.
Mr. Thompson was very family-oriented and loved his grandchildren. He loved his computer and he made many friends during his daily truck stop visits.
Surviving are a daughter, Kimberly JoAnn (Michael) Sterling, of Washington, PA ; 4 sons to a previous marriage, William Thompson, of Nattleboro, MA; Thomas Thompson, of Norwood, MA; Stphen Thompson, of North Orange, MA and Allen Thompson, of Mt. Julliet, TN; 2 brothers, Edward Thompson, of Gardner, MA and Florida and David Thompson, of Gardner, MA; 2 grandchildren, Alyvia and Brandon Sterling and a companion, Olive Hormell, of North Canton, OH.
Friends will be received on Monday from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. at the William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Ave, Washington, PA 15301, where services will be held on Tuesday, March 20, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Alyce Curry officiating. Burial will follow at the Washington Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded graveside by Edwin Scott Linton American Legion Post 175.
