Nellie Rita Sams

Washington resident enjoyed square dancing Nellie Rita Sams, 83, of Washington, died Wednesday, May 14, 2003, in Washington County Health Center, Washington. She was born August 10, 1919, in Vance Station, Washington County, a daughter of Thomas and Nell Guest Carton. She was a graduate of Trinity High School. She was a member of St. Hilary Roman Catholic Church and its Christian Mothers. Mrs. Sams enjoyed square dancing with her husband. On May 1, 1941, she married Stanley Sams, who died August 6, 1992. Surviving are a son, Mark Sams of Washington; four daughters, Kimberly Scarfo of Follansbee, W.Va., Karen Petrosky of Greensburg, Sylvia Phillips of Canonsburg and Kathy Thomas of Washington; a sister, Pat Thompson of Washington; 13 grandchildren, Tyler, Chelsea and Anna Sams, Matthew, Mark, Rob and John Scarfo, Ellen Nasto, Danny Petrosky, Scott and Donald McWreath and Beth Shrum and Dana Davis; and nine great-grandchildren. Deceased are a brother, John Carlton; and three sisters, Katie Marker, Agnes McBride and Mable Roupe. SAMS - Friends of Nellie Rita Sams of Washington, who died Wednesday, May 14, 2003, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 17, with the Rev. Thomas D. O'Neil as celebrant. Interment will follow in Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Peters Township.
