John Paul “ Jack “ Carter, 84, of Washington, died Saturday, April 11, 2008, in Presbyterian Senior Care, following a lengthy illness.
He was born in Washington on January 31, 1924, a son of Paul G. and Nora Rizor Carter.
Mr. Carter was a graduate of Washington High School and had attended Waynesburg College. He served in the United States Coast Guard in World War II. In his younger years, he was an avid boxer and was a Golden Glove Champion. He enjoyed bowling, watching all local sports on television, and his dog Max.
At one time, Mr. Carter worked in sales for the Kellogg’s Cereal Company and later worked more than twenty years for the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue as a Tax Auditor. While working for the state, he served as president of his union, AFSCME, for several years. He also owned and operated two local businesses in the 1960’s and early 1070’s, the Town & Country Restaurant and the Greentree Lounge, both in Washington.
On August 5, 1945, he married Helen Marie Szeg, who died on May *, 2003.
Surviving are three sons, R. Brice ( Glenna ) Carter of Washington, John P. ( Margaret ) Carter, Jr., of Arvada, Colorado, and Gregory M. ( Elizabeth ) Carter of Highlands Ranch, Colorado; a daughter, Patricia Ann ( George ) Sprowls of Washington; a sister, Joyce Ann ( Stephen ) Mesko of Washington; eight grandchildren, Cana, Mitchell, and Rylee Carter, Lisa Scott, Leslie Cochran, George Cody Sprowls, Cole Bloom, and Paige Wombaker; and three great-grandchildren, Zachary and Caitlin Scott, and Sofia Cochran.
Friends for John Paul “ Jack “ Carter, 84, of Washington, who died Saturday, April 11, 2008, will be received on Wednesday, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM, in the William G. Neal Funeral Homes., Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, April 17, 2008, at 10:00 AM, in Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Washington Cemetery.
