Elaine Phyllis Amos, 64, of East Washington, died Tuesday, December 19, 2006, in Family Hospice Manor, Pittsburgh, following an extensive battle with cancer.
She was born November 20, 1942, in Washington, a daughter of Henry Mason Abbas and Sophia Edith Garbinski Abbas.
Mrs. Amos received her undergraduate degree at Washington and Jefferson College and a Master’s Degree of Education at the University of Pittsburgh. She was a life-long teacher, holding various teaching positions throughout Washington and Allegheny Counties. In addition, she had helped develop vocational and economic development programs for post and secondary schools as well as adult education. For the last two years, she had served as an advisor for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Education, in Harrisburg.
Mrs. Amos was a member of Polish National Catholic Church and Pennsylvania State Education Association. She was a seamstress, enjoyed gardening, and loved culture and the arts.
She is survived by her loving husband of 46 years, James V. Amos, whom she married November 21, 1960; two daughters, Colleen M. Amos-Mezinze of Mt. Lebanon, and Dr. Jeannine L. Amos-Venti of Austin, Texas; a granddaughter, Claire E. Dorman of Mt. Lebanon; a sister, Rebecca J. (Robert) Sohn of Presto; and two brothers, Daniel and Mason Abbas, both of Washington.
Deceased is a son, Jason James Amos.
Friends and family will be received Noon to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 395 East Maiden Street, Washington. A Blessing Service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, December 22, 2006, in the funeral home, with Father John Mack officiating. Burial will follow in Washington Cemetery. In ieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Family Hospice Manor, 301 Bellevue Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15229.
