WWII Marine vet was driver for Frito Lay, Archway Fred L. Williams, 84, of Washington, died unexpectedly Saturday, November 3, 2007, in Leesburg (Fla.) Regional Medical Center, Leesburg. He was born March 11, 1923, in Sugar Grove, Greene County, a son of Thomas Dorsey and Kathryn Turner Williams. During World War II, Mr. Williams served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the South Pacific, where he participated in the consolidation of the Northern Solomon Islands and Bougainville Operation. He was qualified as a rifle marksman and propeller mechanic and was honorably discharged as a staff sergeant on November 16, 1945. Mr. Williams retired as a driver for Frito Lay and Archway. He was a member of Lone Pine Christian Church and Swart Phillips Legion Post 897, Glyde. Mr. Williams liked to travel and spent 22 winters in Florida, where he enjoyed playing golf, shuffleboard and bocce, and was the activity director at Green Acres Resort. Mr. Williams and Nancy F. Kramer had 25 loving and happy years together. He will be missed by his cat, Bingo. Surviving are two sons, Fred A. Williams of Houston and Todd Williams of Charleston, S.C.; five grandchildren, Matthew, Drew, Chad, Aaron and Chris Williams; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are his wife, Betty Arnold, who died in 1981; a son, Timothy; a brother, Doyle; and three sisters, Olive Shrontz, Kathryn Johnson and Marvel McBroom. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, November 10, with the Rev. Don DeWeese officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Gardens, McMurray. Military rites will be accorded graveside by Swart Phillips Legion Post 897. Memorial contributions may be made to Lone Pine Christian Church, 582 Lone Pine Road, Washington, PA 15301.
