Ida Ferne Irey Hunter, 94, of Claysville, formerly Jolly School Road, Lagonda, died Tuesday, July 10, 2007, in The Washington Hospital. She had been in declining health for more than a year.
She was born July 1, 1913, in Washington, a daughter of George and Ora Grey Irey.
Mrs. Hunter graduated from Trinity High School in 1931 and attended Penn Commercial. She worked in the cafeteria of Lagonda (Joe Walker) School, for the Farm Bureau, now Agway, and the admitting office of Washington Hospital, from where she retired in 1982.
Mrs. Hunter was the oldest living member of Bethel Presbyterian Church, Prosperity, having joined in 1936. She served the church as elder and Sunday School teacher, and was active with the Women’s Missionary Group and the Quilters of Bethel Church.
Mrs. Hunter had been a 4-H Leader, a volunteer at and auxiliary member of Presbyterian Senior Care, a member of Lagonda Homemakers Club, Lagonda Neighborhood Club and AARP, and a former member of Prosperity Grange. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting and quilting.
On November 4, 1936, she married Kenneth W. Hunter, who died March 29, 1962.
Surviving are a son, Gary (Sally) Hunter of Drumore; a daughter, Joan (George) Postlethwait of Prosperity; one sister, Esther Anderson of California, PA; two sisters-in-law, Mary Irey and Gladys Clemens, both of Washington; and two grandchildren, Scott and Karen Hunter.
Deceased are a brother, Arthur Irey; and a half brother, Robert Irey.
Friends will be received 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd, 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 13, 2007, with Pastor George Crawford officiating. Burial will follow in Prosperity Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Bethel Presbyterian Church, 3905 Park Avenue, Prosperity, PA 15329.
