WWII vet enjoyed gardening and yard work.
Frank Malie, 80, of Washington, died at 7:10 a.m. Saturday, February 3, 2007, in Washington Hospital.
He was born September 28, 1926, in Washington, a son of Gasper and Rosalia Falbo Milie.
Mr. Malie served three enlistments in the Marine Corps. His first enlistment (July 1, 1943, to April 14, 1946) was during World War II, where he saw action in the Pacific Theater at Iwo Jima and the Volcano Islands and participated in the occupation of Japan. During his second enlistment (September 24, 1946, to September 23, 1949), he again served in the Pacific Theater and also participated in the occupation of China. Mr. Malie enlisted for a third time (September 24, 1949, to June 21, 1951), served during the Korean conflict, and was honorably discharged as a sergeant.
Mr. Malie worked in the bar mill at Jessop Steel for 23 years and was a member of Alpine Star Lodge for many years.
He enjoyed gardening and yard work and loved his cat, Daphne.
Mr. Malie supported several causes, including Habitat for Humanity, St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, Christian Children's Fund and the ASPCA for animal welfare.
On May 29, 1954, he married Anita Louise "Micky" McCombs, who is deceased.
Surviving are a son, Frank Joseph Malie of Claysville; a daughter, Cynthia Louise (Kurtis) Hilderbrand of Prosperity; a sister, Elizabeth McKennan of Tampa, Fla.; and two grandchildren, Tarashea Nicole Malie and Dustin Dominick Malie.
Deceased, in addition to his wife, are three brothers, Joseph, James and Albert Malie; and a sister, Helen Haller.
Friends will be received from 1 to 2 p.m., the time of a memorial service, Saturday, February 10, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, with the Rev. Floyd Marasco officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to a charity of the donor's choice or to a charity mentioned above. Interment will be held at a later date.
