Howard L. “Huey” Long, 87, of Washington, died Wednesday, January 31, 2007, in Donnell House, following a lengthy illness.
He was born March 24, 1919, in Blacksburg, North Carolina, a son of George and Lonnie Mae Simons Long.
Mr. Long was a member of Wright’s Memorial Chapel.
He worked as a coal miner for Tylerdale Mine and Pittsburgh Steel. He also had worked as a machine operator at Canon Metal and Teledyne.
He had pitched for, coached and managed the Washington Grays baseball team.
Mr. Long enjoyed fishing, hunting and playing dart ball.
His wife, Dorothy Mae Ward McDonald Long, is deceased.
Surviving are two sons, James R. McDonald and Gilbert E. Long, both of Washington; two daughters, Naomi J. Thomas of Pittsburgh, and Patricia L. Burns of Harrisburg; twelve grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several great-great grandchildren.
Deceased are a daughter, Janice R. Nichols; and a son, Michael L. Long.
Friends will be received 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 3, 2007, with Rev. Arthur E. Doctor, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Gardens, McMurray.
