William Burnette

October 10, 1936 — January 29, 2007

William L. Burnette Sr., 70, of Washington, died at 1:45 p.m. Monday, January 29, 2007, in Washington Hospital, following a lengthy illness. He was born October 10, 1936, in Washington, a son of Albert and Alverta Lattimore Burnette. Mr. Burnette was a draftsman at Cooper Power Systems for 30 years. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1956 to 1960. He was a member of Boy Scouts of America and served as a Scoutmaster. Mr. Burnette was a member of Neighborhood Commissioners and Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 of American Legion, where he was a past commander. He had served as a deputy commander in the 25th District. He was a member of Royal Canadian American Legion Branch 43 of Oshawa, Canada, since 1990, and was a member of American Legion Home Association for many years. A Trinity High School graduate, he attended Washington School of Drafting from 1964 to 1965 and Triangle Tech, Pittsburgh, where he became an electrician. He was also a school bus driver for Schweinebraten Bus Co. Surviving are a son, William L. Burnette Jr. and wife Diana of El Mirage, Ariz.; a daughter, Lillian Lee Burnette Mounts Manfredi and husband William of Washington; two sisters, Margaret Eileen McCullough and Mary Emma McCracken, both of Washington; and four grandchildren, Aaron and Shawn Burnette of Washington, Joshua Mounts of Washington and Eric Mounts of South Carolina. Deceased are a brother, Clifford Burnette; a stepbrother, Alfred L. Campbell; and a sister, Hazel Dental. Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, February 2, with the Rev. Meade Lacock officiating. Interment will follow in Washington Cemetery with full military rites conducted graveside by Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 of American Legion. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to American Cancer Society.
