Laura B. Hannen, 93, of Washington, passed away peacefully, Friday, January 19, 2007, in her home.
She was born March 17, 1913, in Washington, a daughter of Blaine D. and Anna R. Burroughs.
Mrs. Hannen graduated from Washington High School and the Washington Business College. In 1978, she retired from the Anderson, Pollock and Hood Insurance Agency, where she worked as a secretary for many years.
Mrs. Hannen and her husband joined the Jefferson Avenue United Methodist Church, in 1953, where she was a Sunday school teacher and member of the United Methodist Women. She loved her faith and would say that she was born a Methodist and would always be a Methodist, as long as her health permitted. She attended church services regularly.
As a young woman, she played the bass drum in an all girls band. She was introduced to her husband by her friend, Earl Doria, when they became the first men to join this band.
Mrs. Hannen was a quiet lady, who lived a private life. She enjoyed watching baseball, basketball and football games on television. Feeding the squirrels and caring for her pets made her happy. Her cats, Sassy and Sweet Pea, will sadly miss her.
Since January 2005, she had devoted caregivers, who will lovingly remember Mrs. Hannen for always saying thank you to them.
On April 20, 1935, she married Arthur W. Hannen, at the First Methodist Church, in Washington. They were blessed with sixty-nine years of marriage before his death on January 21, 2005.
Surviving are four grandchildren, Lt. Timothy Hannen, of California, Mary Laura Hannen and Scott Hannen, both of Louisiana, and Bobbi Jo Hannen Wood, of Alabama; four great grandchildren, Shannen Miller, Robin Miller, and Eliot Wood, all of Alabama and Reagan Hannen, of Tennessee; and a sister, Sarah Jane Grable, of Virginia.
Deceased in addition to her husband, are two sons, Robert Hannen and William Hannen; and a half sister, Frances McKahan.
To respect Mrs. Hannen’s wishes, there will be no public viewing, visitation, or services. Private entombment will be in the Washington Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Jefferson Avenue United Methodist Church, 160 Jefferson Avenue, Washington, PA 15301, or Washington Area Humane Society, P.O. Box 66, Eighty-Four, PA 15330.
