Wilbert Madison Strawn, 89, of Washington, died Sunday, January 7, 2007, in Donnell House, Washington. He had been ill the last year.
He was born October 5, 1917, in Spring Hill, West Virginia, a son of Hiram and Cora Lemley Strawn.
Mr. Strawn graduated from West Alexander High School.
During World War II, he served in the Army, in the European Theater, in Tunisia, Sicily, Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, Northern Apennines, and Po Valley Campaigns, receiving the Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with one Silver Service Star, and one Bronze Star.
Mr. Strawn was employed at Brockway #7, as a fork lift operator, for over thirty years.
He was an active member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church as long as his health permitted.
Mr. Strawn was a bowler at the Alpine Lanes and enjoyed gardening.
On July 17, 1947, he married Ida Jeannette Mounts Strawn, who died April 26, 2003.
Surviving are a son, Douglas Strawn, of Washington; two daughters, Kay Barni, husband Les, of Washington, and Elizabeth Lawrence, husband Tom, of Canonsburg; six grandchildren, Julie Tabish, Joy Taylor, Jeremy Barni, Ryan Lawrence, Rachel Mumford and Jacob Lawrence; three great grandchildren, Zachary, Jacob, and MacKenzie Tabish.
Deceased is a brother Albert Strawn.
Friends will be received 7 to 9 p.m., Monday, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 10, 2007, with the Rev. Thomas Hamilton officiating. Interment will follow in Prosperity Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded by Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 American Legion. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Donnell House, c/o Hospice Care of the Washington Hospital, 155 Wilson Avenue, Washington, PA 15301.
