Mary Yacko Guzy, loving mother and grandmother, died in Los Angeles, California, on Sunday, July 8, 2007, following three years of declining health. She was born on July 30, 1915, in Hazel Kirk, Pennsylvania, the eldest child of Michael and Ann Yacko. A graduate of Charleroi High School, Mary married Pete Guzy on July 30, 1938, settling on the family farm in Monongahela, PA. After moving to Washington, PA, in 1945, she and Pete owned and operated a gasoline service station and grocery store on Maple Avenue for over 30 years. Well known and respected in the community, Mary often said she never met a stranger. Always ready with a warm smile and a friendly greeting, she was fondly remembered for helping others. Three brothers preceded her in death. Mrs. Guzy is survived by a son, Dr. Peter Guzy of Los Angeles, California; a daughter, Elizabeth Froman, and her husband David Froman of San Diego, California; and grandchildren Annemarie Guzy, Michelle Froman, and Daniel Froman.
A Memorial Mass was celebrated at the Nazareth House in Los Angeles, CA, where Mary lived her last three years. Private burial followed in Pennsylvania beside her husband, Pete, whom she survived by twenty-nine years. Family and friends are invited to a Memorial Mass to be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, September 7th by Father Joseph Jugan at St. Michael's Byzantine Catholic Church, 166 E. College St., Canonsburg, PA, where Mary was a long-time member.
