Robert W. Sweeney, 82, of Washington, died at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, September 1, 2007, in Washington Hosptial. He had been ill for eighteen months.
He was born December 8, 1924, in Lawrenceville, a son of Frederick and Margaret Wallace Sweeny.
Mr. Sweeney was a graduate of Washington High School and entered the U.S. Marine Corps on April 10, 1944. He participated in action against the enemy at Iwo Jima, Volcano Isands, where he was wounded in action, and also participated in the Occupation of Japan. He was awarded the Purple Heart and Good Conduct Medal and was Honorably Discharged May 22, 1946.
Mr. Sweeney was a policeman for the city of Washington for over twenty years, where he attained the rank of Lieutenant. He also worked for Washington County Sheriff�s Department for five years, and was employed by Western Southern Insurance Company for several years.
He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, where he served as an usher for over fifty years. He coached Midget Football and enjoyed story telling and singing to his grandchildren.
Mr. Sweeney took woodworking classes at Pawlosky Lumber and was a member of F.O.P. Lodge #95 and Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 Amercian Legion.
On September 18, 1948, he married Delia �Dee� Santy Sweeney, who died June 16, 2005.
Surviving are three sons, John Robert (Sherry) Sweeney, Michael James (Margaret) Sweeney, both of Washington, and Matthew Wallace (Lesley) Sweeny, of Burnsville, Minnesota; a daughter, Tamara Jean Sweeney, of Jupiter, Florida; three sisters, Kathleen Harkcom, of Washington and Florida, Virginia Vezie, of Phoenix, Arizona, and Ellen Jean Kaufman, of Zanesville, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Nicole Sweeny, Meghan Sweeny, Victoria Roelandts, Patrick McKenzie Sweeny, Robert Roelandts, Sydney Sweeny, and Michael Dale Sweeny.
Deceased are a brother, Frederick Sweeny and a sister, Margaret Betty Amos.
Friends will be received 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd. 395 East Maiden Street, Washington. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, September 6, in Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, 119 West Chestnut Street, with Father John Bauer, as celebrant. Burial will follow in Immaculate Conception Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded by Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 American Legion. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to J.F.K. Catholic Library, 111 W. Spruce Stret, Washington, PA 15301, or Children�s Advocacy Center, Jefferson Avenue, Washington, PA 15301.
