Roxie Martin

Margaret R. "Roxie" Martin, 77, of Washington died on Saturday, April 8, 2006, following a lengthy illness. Born on September 5, 1928, to Carl Kohler and S. Edith Hickman, she was raised by her grandparents Arch C. and Mary Matilda Hickman of Washington. On August 27, 1955, she married Rev. Henderson E. Martin, who died on November 22, 1973. A graduate of Washington High School and the International Bible College, Mrs. Martin was a homemaker, who had held several clerical positions in the area. Later in life she worked in the Green Thumb Program. Over the years, she worked with various agencies to open her home to foster children and those who could not live independently. An active churchgoer, she was Protestant by faith. She especially enjoyed traveling, spending time at her vacation property, and being surrounded by her grandchildren. She was a long time judge of elections in the seventh ward fourth precinct and had been active in the Democratic Party and the American Legion Auxiliary. Mrs. Martin is survived by her son, Dr. Richard H. (Lori) Martin of Centerville and her daughters Mrs. Debra (Richard) Romano of Madison, OH and Mrs. Penny (Thomas) Daub of Washington. Her grandchildren include Danielle and Amber Strnad, Shannon and Joshua Romano, Jessica, James, Patrick, and Allyn Brown, and Martin Daub. She is also survived by two sisters Mrs. Jean Putman and Mrs. Faye Massingill both of Cleveland OH, and by a number of nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death in addition to her husband were her daughter Ruth Ann Martin, and her bother Isaac Steven Ward. Friends of Margaret R. "Roxie" Martin, 77, of Washington, who died on Saturday, April 8, 2006, will be received on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM in the William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held on Wednesday, April 12, 2006. Burial will take place in the Athens Cemetery, Athens, West Virginia.
