William Boyd McGowan Sr., 81, of Washington, died Wednesday, April 5, 2006, in UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh, following a one-month illness. He was born January 19, 1925, in Allegheny County, a son of William H. and Emma Beam McGowan. Mr. McGowan served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, receiving American Theater, Victory and Pacific Theater ribbons. He was a member of Liberty United Methodist Church. Mr. McGowan was a self-employed electrician and also had worked for Tri-State, Washington Mould and Machine, Plasteel and L.W. Miller Roofing Co. On October 20, 1946, he married Leora Ashbrook, who died in 1971. On December 28, 1984, he married Linda Garrett, who survives. Also surviving are three sons, William B. (Phoebe) McGowan Jr., Floyd J. "Fuzzy" McGowan and Daniel G. McGowan, all of Washington; two daughters, Sherma (Andrew) Caroselli and Cindy Sue Roberts, both of Washington; two stepdaughters, Tina Willhoft and Kimberly A. Garrett, both of Washington; three brothers, Joe McGowan of Buckhannon, W.Va., James McGowan of Houston, Texas, and Thomas McGowan of Scenery Hill; a sister, Jean Hennick of Washington; 13 grandchildren, Delinda Mrenak, Michelle Baker, Steven and Keith Cole, Keegan, Brogan, Zephan and Branigan McGowan, Carrie L. Miller and Chad William McGowan, Charles William Roberts III, Clinton Louis Roberts and Casey Lee McGowan; and five stepgrandchildren, Christine, George, Samantha, Justin and Victoria Willhoft. Deceased are a sister, Louella Englert; a grandson, Canan James Pitcock; and a nephew, Larry (Mike) McGowan.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 8, with the Rev. Larry Wiltrout officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Gardens Cemetery, McMurray.
