Esther Leona Burkey, 87, of York, formerly of Thomas Campbell Apartments and Donnan Avenue, Washington, died at 1:45 a.m. Tuesday, January 31, 2006, in Manor Care, York, where she had been a patient for five years.
She was born January 2, 1919, in Washington, a daughter of William Howard and Leona Isabel Gatten McVehil.
Mrs. Burkey attended Washington schools. She had been an assistant district manager for G.C. Murphy's restaurant division.
She was a member of Jefferson Avenue United Methodist Church in Washington and an auxiliary member of Edwin Scott Linton American Legion Post 175.
Surviving are two daughters, Phyllis Jean (Thomas) Breiner of York and Bonnie Lou (David) Hewitt of Indianapolis, Ind.; a brother, Robert Lee McVehil of Beaver Falls; a sister, Joanne Smith of Clearwater, Fla.; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased are two brothers, William Lester McVehil and Donald Earl McVehil; and a sister, Nyma Lucille Wyland.
Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, February 3, with the Rev. John Hoffman officiating. Entombment will follow in Washington Cemetery Mausoleum.
