Walter R. Tennant, Sr.

Columbia Gas equipment operator was WWII veteran. Walter R. Tennant Sr., 85, of Prosperity, died at 7:41 a.m. Friday, June 23, 2006, in UPMC-Presbyterian hospital, Pittsburgh, following a brief illness. He was born November 23, 1920, in Franklin Township, Greene County, a son of Jesse James and Jess Walker Tennant. During World War II, Mr. Tennant served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a private first class. He was stationed in the Caribbean and earned the Good Conduct Medal. Mr. Tennant worked as a heavy equipment operator for Columbia Gas. He was a member of Upper Ten Mile Presbyterian Church in Prosperity. He enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, cutting grass, reading and watching hummingbirds. Mr. Tennant was a member of Claysville American Legion, Morris Township Historical Society, Morris Township Volunteer Fire Department and National Rifle Association and previously belonged to Anawanna Hunting and Fishing Club. On July 18, 1951, he married Louise Jane Wilson, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Walter R. Tennant Jr. of Monongahela; a daughter, Rae Louise (Rick) Ransil of Canonsburg; five grandchildren, Michael McDowell, Kaleigh Tennant, Nicholas Tennant, Abigail Tennant and Madison Tennant; a great-grandchild, Ty Craft; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are two sisters, Dorothy Martin and Nellie Wise; and a brother, Guy Tennant Sr. Friends will be received from 4 to 9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 28, with the Rev. Catherine Peternel officiating. Burial will follow in Prosperity Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded by Claysville American Legion Post 639.
