Charles E. Smith, Sr., Washington, died Thursday, July 27, 2006, in the Washington Hospital after having been in declining health.
He was born on July 2, 1925, in Washington, a son of William and Rose Barr Smith.
After attending Cecil High School, he served in the United States navy during World War II. Having fought in the European theater, he was involved in the first wave of the invasion of Normandy.
Mr. Smith was the founder of Smith�s Auto Supply, having done so in 1957 in his home. Additionally, he was founder of Smith�s Hog Farm on Lagonda Road. He was a former member of the PA Farm Association, the PA Hog Association, was an active leader in 4-H, South Franklin-Morris Townships, was a long time supporter of boy�s Baseball and had once managed a Bronco team. He was also a fifty year member of Edwin Scott Linton Post # 175, American Legion.
Mr. Smith enjoyed many outdoor activities including hunting.
On January 10, 1948, he married Alice Irene Schrader, who died on August 22, 2004.
Surviving are three sons, William Smith of Washington, Charles Smith, Jr., of Beeville, TX, and Bruce Smith of Washington; two daughters, Debra A. Smith and Karen A. Kopnitsky, both of Washington; a sister, Catherine Toth of Washington; Ten grandchildren, Travis, Meghan, Jared, Trevor, Charles E. III, Tara, Amanda, Courtney, and Aaron, and Justin; as well as three great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death are sisters, Julia Bizzak, Rose Ambrose, Elizabeth Rematt, and Mary J. Ranone; and brothers, John F., Joseph, and Steve Smith.
Friends of Charles E. Smith, Sr., Washington, who died Thursday, July 27, 2006, will be received on Saturday, from 7 to 9 PM, and Sunday, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM, in the William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held on Monday, July 31, 2006, at 1:00 PM, Rev. John Hoffman officiating. Burial will follow in Washington Cemetery. Military Honors accorded by Edwin Scott Linton Post # 175, American Legion. The family is requesting memorial donations to: West Washington United Methodist Church, 625 Fayette Street, Washington, or 4-H Scholarship Fund, c/o 4-H Office, Court House Square, Washington, PA 15301.
