Dallas D. Hess

Retired corrections officer and bus driver Dallas Delmar Hess, 74, of Washington, died at 6:15 p.m. Friday, June 2, 2006, in Donnell House, Washington, following a three-year illness. He was born February 17, 1932, in Centerville, a son of Chester E. and Althea Justus Hess. Mr. Hess was a 1950 graduate of Beallsville High School and had attended Washington & Jefferson College. He served six years of active duty in the Army and 20 years in the Army Reserves, earning the rank of sergeant, first class. During his military career, Mr. Hess was associated with the 630th Transportation Company, 99th ARCOM and 429th Engineers. While on active duty, he served in the Berlin Crisis and Korea and did two tours of duty in Vietnam. Among his honors are National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, two Overseas Bars, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and Army Commendation Medal. Mr. Hess retired in 1995 from Washington County Corrections, where he had worked as a corrections officer with the rank of sergeant at the county jail for 14 years. On February 2, 2006, he retired from D&W Bus Co., where he had worked as a bus driver since 1996. Previously, he had worked at Washington Mould, Machine and Foundry, Mellon Bank, Fairmont Supply and Tri-State Supply. He was a member of American Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post 175, was vice president of Home Association and former president of Corrections Officers Local 1099. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, hunting and collecting coins, stamps and hats. Mr. Hess was a member of Fairhill Manor Christian Church, Washington. On March 4, 1977, he married Kathryn "Kass" Mikuta, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Brittany Marie (Jonathan) Jacobovitz of Elyria, Ohio; a son, Dana Dallas (Danielle) Hess of Pittsburgh; three sons from a previous marriage, Kent Hess of Brownsville, Keith Hess of Beallsville and Kirk Hess of Centerville; a brother, Chester E. Hess Jr. of Ravenna, Ohio; a sister, Tanice Nakutis of Daisytown; several grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are four brothers, Vernice Hess, Gaylord Hess, Clinton Hess and Samuel Barton; and two sisters, Darlene Gallagher and Marian Markley. Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 395 East Maiden Street, Washington, where services will be held at noon Tuesday, June 6, with the Rev. David Mansfield officiating. Burial will follow in National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Cecil Township. Military rites will be accorded graveside by American Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post 175.
