Washington resident served in U.S. Army during WWII.
Charles Minton Groves, 87, of Washington, died Tuesday, September 26, 2006, in Washington County Health Center, Washington. He had been ill since 2001.
He was born May 10, 1919, in Waynesburg, a son of Charles Parley and Ella Minton Groves.
Mr. Groves served in the U.S. Army during World War II, receiving the Good Conduct Medal, Philippines Liberation Ribbon with one bronze star, American Theater Service Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Service Medal with two bronze stars and World War II Victory Medal.
Mr. Groves was a graduate of Waynesburg High School and was a steelworker at Jessop Steel for 30 years.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Washington, Keystone Club and Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 American Legion. He enjoyed golf.
On January 3, 1943, he married Mildred Marie Spragg, who died October 17, 2001.
Surviving are a son, David Ray (Betsi) Groves of Columbus, Ohio; a daughter, Melinda (Thomas) Carter of Washington; six grandchildren, Christine Nolla, Heather Dunn, Jason Hayes, Joshua Hayes, Tegan Groves and Mattie Groves; and nine great-grandchildren.
Deceased are two sisters, Sara Carter, and an infant sister.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, September 29, with the Rev. Paul Wheeler officiating.
