George Barlow, 77, of Washington, died at 12:15 a.m. Wednesday, June 14, 2006, in the home of his son, James, following a lengthy illness.
He was born October 18, 1928, in Washington, a son of Samuel and Eliza Storey Barlow.
Mr. Barlow graduated in 1947 from Washington High School, where he played varsity football. He continued his football career and was an undefeated quarterback at Canterbury College in Ohio. After college, he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
He retired from the bar mill annealing department of Jessop Steel with 291/2 years of service. Previous to this, he worked for a time for Washington Fire Department and the FBI and was one of the first police officers for South Strabane Township. He was a former co-owner of Barlasu's Restaurant partnership.
Mr. Barlow was a member of Keystone Club, Edwin Scott Linton American Legion Post 175 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 927 Hawkins Post Home.
He enjoyed sports, playing football for the Washington Generals, being an assistant football coach at Patten School in the 1960s and officiating high school football for 35 years. He was inducted into Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 1993.
Mr. Barlow was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Washington.
Surviving are two sons, George Charles Barlow and James Russell (Kim) Barlow, both of Washington; a daughter, Lisa Lee Rusilko of Washington; two sisters, Ethel Day of Fresno, Calif., and Jean Reedy of Bethany, Okla.; 10 grandchildren, Brittany Sutterfield, Courtney Barlow, James R. Barlow Jr., Sarah Barlow, Shannen Rusilko, Summerlee Rusilko, Amber Rusilko, Ladden Rusilko, April Walton and Megan Walton; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased are five brothers, Samuel Barlow Jr., Edward Barlow, James F. Barlow, Richard Barlow and John W. Barlow; two sisters, Mary Barlow and Eliza Barlow; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 17, with the Rev. Karen Stephenson officiating. Burial will follow in Washington Cemetery.
