George Edmund Funka, Sr.

George Edmund Funka, Sr., 86, of Washington, died at 2:50 p.m. Sunday, September 24, 2006, in his home, following a lengthy illness. He was born August 23, 1920, in Canonsburg, a son of John E. and Anna C. Neiser Funka. Mr. Funka served in the US Army Quartermaster Corps. as a Technician, 5th grade, in the European Theater during World War II. He was employed as a caseworker byr the PA Department of Public Welfare. Mr. Funka was a member of St. Michael’s Byzantine Catholic Church, Canonsburg, VFW Post 191, AARP, and PA State Employees Retirement group. He was also a member of Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 of the American Legion, where he was a member of the firing squad and chairman of the School Awards Committee. On January 24, 1942, he married Katherine Orlosky, who survives. Also surviving are a son, James L. (Serena) Funka of South Port, North Carolina; a daughter, Deborah K. (Keith) Halsey of Dale City, Virginia; three sisters, Anna Marie Densen and Harriet Martys, both of Canonsburg, and Ruth Lazear of St. Petersburg, Florida; six grandchildren, Kristi Loop, Kelli Funka, George, Kenny and Daniel Halsey, and Lori Mead; and three great-grandchildren, Megan Mead, Dustin Mead, and Olivia Loop. Deceased are a son, George Edward Funka, Jr., two brothers, Charles Miller and John Funka; and two sisters, Edna Caroselli and Lillian Steele. Friends will be received 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday, September 29th, in St. Michael’s Byzantine Catholic Church, Canonsburg, with Father Joseph Jugan as celebrant. Burial will follow in Washington Cemetery with military rites accorded graveside by Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 of the American Legion. A Panachida Service will be held in the funeral home at 7:00 p.m. Thursday.
